Create a new multilevel list

      1. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, select the Multilevel List button.
      2. Select the Define New List Style... menu item.

        In the Multilevel List dialog, Define New List Style is circled in red.

        The Define New List Style dialog opens.

      3. Enter a name in the text field: Name.

        In the Define New List Style dialog, the Name field is circled in red.

      4. Select the Format button.

        In the Modify Style dialog, the Format button is circled in red.

      5. Select the Numbering…menu option.

        In the Define New List Style dialog, the Numbering menu item is circled in red.

        The Modify Multilevel List dialog opens.

      6. Select the More button.

        In the Modify Multilevel List dialog, the More button is circled in red.

      7. Make sure that level 1 is selected.

        In the Modify Multilevel List dialog, in the Click Level to Modify area, the first level is circled in red.

      8. In the Number style for this level dropdown list, select number style for a numbered list or choose a bullet character for a bulleted list.

        In the Modify Multilevel List dialog, in the Number style for this list, 1, 2, 3 is highlighted.

      9. Now you must link a style with the first list level. In the Link level to style dropdown list, select in the corresponding style; for example, style "List" or "Heading 1".

        In the Modify Multilevel List dialog, the Link level to style group is circled in red and Link is the selected style.

      10. To set the position of the bullets and the text position for all levels, select the Set for All Levels... button.

        The Set for All Levels dialog, where you can specify properties for the levels in your new list.

      11. Select level 2, set the number style (or bullet character) and link a corresponding style.

      12. Repeat these steps for all needed levels.

        Here is an example of a multilevel list with four (4) levels:

      13. Finally, select the OK button.

        The multilevel list that you created is displayed in the multilevel list menu in Current List group and in the List Styles group.

      14. Hover over the list to display the name.

        In the Multilevel List, the name of the new list: My new multilevel list is displayed.

      15. If you want to change the settings for your multilevel, list right-click on the list and select the Modify.

        Important

        Please do not specify any numbering definitions directly on the styles.
